The small village of Madrid, New Mexico was a coal mining town from late in the
19th through the middle of the 20th centuries.  On Christmas Day 1945 the original
1899 Tavern burned down - it was temporarily located on what is now the Old Coal
Mine Museum until its current location was completed in 1947 which included the 40
ft. lodge pole pine bar and many of the furnishings.

The mines closed in 1954 and Madrid became known as a ghost town for about 20
years.

When you "belly up to the bar" at the Mine Shaft Tavern, you will be served from
the oldest continuously run Tavern in Santa Fe County as well as the longest
stand-up bar in the state of New Mexico!

Paintings over the bar by renowned Tinker Town artist Ross Ward colorfully portrays
Madrid's rich history, while the mural over the stage "The Cultural Gem of The Mining
District" portrays the history of The Mine Shaft Tavern and its many years of live music,
melodrama, food, drink and fun!
